The town of Brummana, located in the Metn District of Mount Lebanon, is a major summer destination for visitors and locals alike.
Built in the characteristic Levantine limestone and sitting on top of a pine-forested hill, the town is a buzzing island of sophistication with outstanding restaurants, lively nightlife, and spectacular vistas of Beirut and the Mediterranean.
Broummana still has a number of 18th and 19th century homes that date back to the reign of the Abillama Emirs.
Just north of the village stands the 18th-century Deir Mar Chaaya Maronite monastery, originally built on top of a 1,500-year old Byzantine fort.
Brummana was a mountain place of worship for the Phoenicians, and sarcophagi and other carved rocks dating from that time can still be found in nearby Aaranta.
Adding to Brummana’s distinctive culture is the local high school founded by a rather extraordinary Swiss Quaker, Theophilus Waldmeier, in 1873.
It’s said that the custom of five o’clock tea is a result of the school’s influence, and even today the school enjoys support from British and American Quaker communities.
